Why Capoeira?
"What makes capoeira so special?"
"Is it a dance or a martial art?"
"Why should I do Capoeira?"Capoeira is a unique blend of martial arts, fitness, flexibility, core strength, music, dance, tradition, spoken and bodily language, family and... wait for it... FUN! That rare combination by itself makes it special.
When people ask whether Capoeira is a dance or a martial art, the answer is both. Mestre Bimba and others have shown on many occasions the effectiveness of Capoeira as a fight. At Centrosul we are very aware of the intent of Capoeira as a fight, but we place more focus on Capoeira as a dialog or a playful conversation making it appear at times as a dance.
Everyone has their own reasons for learning Capoeira. But Capoeira challenges us all to push beyond our boundaries physically, mentally and emotionally. Sure, running on a treadmill and pumping weights with your mp3 player blaring in your ears is one way to get exercise, but Centrosul Capoeira offers well more than any ordinary gym membership. Can I do Capoeira?
Of course! From the first moment you see Capoeira, hear the music and feel the energy of the roda you will want to join in the fun. But then you ask... "Wait! Can I do that? That looks hard! I'm not flexible enough..."
We hear these questions and concerns all the time, and the answer is always the same. "If I can do it, I'm sure you can do it." We're not all born with the innate ability to leap buildings, but we do the best we can with what's been given to us. At Centrosul, we follow Mestre Bimba's tradition of Capoeira Regional which includes a series of Capoeira sequences. These sequences form a foundation for learning Capoeira and make it accessible to all. We aim to bring out the best in every student of Capoeira, helping each other along the way. So even if you can't leap a frog let alone the proverbial building, try! That's all we really ask at Centrosul. Just TRY! What do you have to lose? Stop by the academy, take a class, and most importantly... have FUN!
