Centrosul History
Centrosul Capoeira first came to the United States in 1999 with Guilherme Pitrez deBarros (Contra-Mestre Gui). Contra-Mestre Gui studied capoeira with Mestre Leca in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, and with Mestre Indo in Bahia, Brasil before moving to Southern California to spread the art form. While in California, Contra-Mestre Gui was indroduced to Mestre Deputado, a former student of Mestre Bimba's from Goiana. Under the tutelage of Mestre Deputado and Mestre Onca Negra, Contra- Mestre Gui opened the first traditional school of capoeira regional in California, and the first formal formatura was held in 2005.
